It’s Zoo time!!!
It’s Zoo time!!!
26 November 2008Aspiring young zoo keepers from Lancaster and Morecambe college have been on a a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Antwerp Zoo in Belgium.
Lancaster and Morecambe College received Leonardo Mobility funding for the 'Zoo Work' project. The project enabled four students, studying towards their BTEC National Diploma in Animal Management, to undertake four weeks work experience at the prestigious Royal Antwerp Zoo in Belgium.
The students joined the zoo's internship programme and worked in food preparation, maintenance and upkeep of animal quarters, cleaning of animal quarters and assisted the full-time animal caretakers in their daily activities.
The opportunity provided by this project is tremendous. Although zoos and conservation parks are a growing part of the tourism 'mix' in the North West of England, there is no world class zoo within easy reach of Lancaster.
Antwerp Zoo, with around 5000 animals, presented a superb opportunity for the students to get a real feel for working with animals in a zoo setting. They got invaluable experience working within this organisation at the cutting edge of conservation and breeding of endangered species.
This students have had an excellent work experience that will be used to further their careers. The project has also developed awareness of the European labour market and the mobility that exists within it.
