Project Name: Competency Based Training programme in Intensive Care Medicine

CoBaTrICE-artworkThis Leonardo Transfer of Innovation project is helping to ensure that intensive care doctors across Europe possess the same core skills and abilities.

Partner organisations from across Europe came together to develop an international training programme for Intensive Care Medicine. The work set out to harmonise training standards for intensive care doctors in Europe and ensure a common standard of clinical competance.

The resulting 'Competency Based Training programme in Intensive Care Medicine' (CoBaTrICE) has achieved this through a worldwide process of consultation and consensus-building, involving specialist physicians and trainees, nurses and allied health professionals, patients and their relatives, and national and international organisations.

The project has been partly funded by Leonardo Transfer of Innovation funding and supported by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (lead organisation).

Some of the project activities include:

  • A worldwide survey of national Intensive Care Medicine training programmes.
  • Development of a comprehensive competency based syllabus.
  • Development of assessment guidelines.
  • Linking competencies and syllabus to educational resources.
  • Development of an electronic- portfolio.

Judith Wilde, part of the project team from the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Birmingham told us:

"The new Intensive Care Medicine programme has already been adopted by seven European countries and three in other world regions, and others are currently considering either adopting the whole programme or incorporating aspects of the syllabus into their training processes."

This project received Leonardo Transfer of Innovation funding, which is all about sharing ideas in vocational education and training between countries.
